Comey’s Son-in-Law Resigns From DOJ After His Office Brings Indictment

DAILY CALLER NEWS FOUNDATION—James Comey’s son-in-law resigned from the Department of Justice Thursday night after the former FBI director was indicted.

Troy Edwards worked as deputy chief of the National Security Section in the Eastern District of Virginia U.S. Attorney’s Office, the same division prosecuting Comey.

Comey was indicted on two counts for allegedly obstructing a congressional proceeding and making a false statement to Congress during his September 2020 testimony related to the Trump-Russia investigation, where he said he had not “authorized someone else at the FBI to be an anonymous source in news reports.” His arraignment is set for Oct. 9.

“To uphold my oath to the Constitution and country, I hereby resign as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia in the Department of Justice effective immediately,” Edwards wrote in a letter addressed to Lindsey Halligan, who President Donald Trump appointed as interim U.S. attorney on Monday.

Edwards was at the courthouse as the grand jury was considering the indictment and he spoke privately to the judge for close to 30 minutes, CNN reported. Judge Michael Nachmanoff, a Biden appointee, was assigned to the case.

“My heart is broken for the Department of Justice, but I have great confidence in the federal judicial system, and I’m innocent,” Comey responded Thursday. “So let’s have a trial and keep the faith.”

Erik Siebert, who formerly led the Eastern District of Virginia office, resigned Friday after Trump called for his removal. Halligan, working against a fast-approaching statute of limitations deadline, quickly secured an indictment after his departure.

Siebert’s father-in-law, Richard Cullen, is the godfather of one of Comey’s daughters.

Comey’s oldest daughter, Maurene Comey, was fired in July from her job as a federal prosecutor in Manhattan. She sued over her termination Sept. 15.

“Ms. Comey’s termination—without cause, without advance notice, and without any opportunity to contest it—was unlawful and unconstitutional,” the lawsuit states, alleging she was fired “solely or substantially because her father is former FBI Director James B. Comey, or because of her perceived political affiliation and beliefs, or both.”

The Eastern District of Virginia did not respond to a request for comment.
